afternoon in oceanside.

tanner and i had a spontaneous friday that should have been documented more. though i'm not too sad it wasn't documented because were just so happy doing what we were doing that it felt nice just to be there. we made our way down to disneyland last night and ate dinner in downtown disney, rode soaring over california and midway mania and called it a night. we're going to miss those passes and i'm glad we were able to squeeze this date night in at the last minute.
rather than driving back to LA last night, we decided to book a hotel room in newport since we would be meeting up with ellen and jared rowley in orange county early the next morning. we stayed in the same hotel we stayed in right after tanner finished his first semester finals last year and brought back so many fun memories. we got free parking thanks to the construction going on (and saved $20 because of it!) and enjoyed a quick one night getaway together.
we woke up early this morning and dawdled around the hotel room while we got ready for a day at the beach and searched for a good breakfast place. we've been craving a good breakfast sandwich ever since we ate the most delicious ones at bunk in portland. however, we ended up getting a text from the rowleys suggesting a different meeting place 20 miles south from san clemente so the waves would be better for our surfing husbands. the hunt for a good breakfast sandwich was ditched and we stopped at a mcdonalds off the 5 and picked up some egg mcmuffins, oatmeal and orange juice.
the drive from newport ended up being about an hour with the location switch to oceanside but we enjoyed a peaceful drive along the coast without music and just swapping opinions, stories and ideas. it was absolutely heavenly after a few weeks in a row of hectic schedules and very little awake hang time with my main squeeze.
jared and ellen were pretty much our first and only friends we made in our ward after we were first married and we knew we were meant to be friends after ellen and i discovered our almost twin wedding rings and jared's enthusiasm about school (and life in general to be honest). we only hung out once before moving but had a couple visits with them through visit teaching, EQ visits and church activities and just instantly bonded with them.
lucy and solomon warmed right up to me and i had so much fun hanging with these three while tan and jared surfed. solomon was even reaching for me to hold him during our walk!! bnotd.
after lots of beach adventuring, being rejected by ruby's and their 40 minute wait, a failed attempt to find a mexican restaurant and a successful attempt to find a different mexican restaurant only to find an empty floor and lots of uncomfortable vibes, we happened upon a little pizza joint and enjoyed a nice little lunch before heading back to LA.
we realize we won't get to have many more weekends like this in LA or even in just a few months after little baby frei comes and just soaked it all up as much as we could.

and now we're settling down after our first afternoon of being parents to val while sonja is in vegas for the super bowl. life is pretty nice these days and i'm glad i've got my tan man to share it with.
